VA Hospital BuildingRepurposing of the VA Hospital Campus
The City continues to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and developers to transition the former veterans hospital campus into mixed use development. This would allow for the development of 160 acres and will include 39 buildings. The City of Knoxville has already included the property into an urban renewal area, allowing for future Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreements, and is currently developing a new zoning designation, specific to the campus, to allow for mixed use of residential, commercial, and light industrial on the property. The VA recently announced plans to move the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) to another location, slated for 2017. The CBOC in Building 1 is the last remaining active area of the campus.
