Training Division
The Knoxville Fire Department Training Division consists of a Captain and a Lieutenant.  Their purpose is to identify training needs in the areas of fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Special Operations and Officer development.

Fire Suppression
In order to provide an effective response to fire incidents, the Training division researches new tactics and strategies experimented and tested by larger fire departments as well as by private and public organizations such as Underwriters Laboratory and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  Staff also conducts an after action review of each fire incident and identifies areas for improvement and then provides training to assure perfection.  The goal is to be proficient and effective in our efforts to save life, property and protect the environment.

Emergency Medical Services
The Knoxville Fire Department has been on the leading-edge of emergency medical services (EMS) since the mid-1970's.  In 1988, the department purchased their first automatic external defibrillator and began providing advance life support services.  In the mid-1990's, the department began providing paramedic level care.  We continue to provide leading-edge care with state of the art equipment.  This is provided by the training division assuring top-notch education for our Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics.

Special Operations
All members are required to obtain training in automobile extrication.  We also encourage members to receive training in high angle and low angle rope rescue, ice rescue, water rescue, confined space rescue and trench rescue procedures.  ShorelineOur Training Division either provides the education and training to our members or seeks external experts to conduct this training.

The Knoxville Fire Department responds to water rescue calls.  We respond to Lake Red Rock with the Pella Fire Department, Department of Natural Resources and Army Corp of Engineers.  We operate a Boston Whaler Water Rescue Boat (B902).
