The Knoxville Fire Department is actively seeking dedicated men and women to serve as firefighters. Each firefighter of the Knoxville Fire Department must meet minimum requirements to respond to calls.

Full-time Firefighter EMT/Paramedic

Entry Requirement Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Ability to write in English with a minimum number of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and function as a team member.
  • Have a vaild certificate from the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium (https://www.dmacc.edu/programs/fire/consortium/Pages/welcome2.aspx) 
  • Successfully complete an oral interview 
  • Pass a physical exam and drug screen 

Required special qualifications

  • Shall possess Iowa Fire Fighter I, II and Hazardous Material Operations Level certification or equivalent.
  • Shall possess or obtain ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 18 months of hire.
  • Shall possess and maintain a State of Iowa emergency Medical Services certification. 
  • Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa and be insurable to operate city vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to perform functions as detailed in the Firefighting and EMS General Description of Duties document.
  • Must be able to pass a physical ability test. 


Part-time Firefighter EMT/Paramedic
